Case Closed

On July 31, 2025, after 25 years of serving as an expert witness for German courts, prosecutors' offices, and investigative agencies across four continents, in cases covering everything from homicide to digital fraud, from anthropological identification to audio forensics, I formally ended my work for the German justice system.

Just so everyone gets the message loud and clear, including the occasional hopeful prosecutor who still somehow manages to land on this page, I simply do not take on assignments anymore from German courts, German prosecutors' offices, or any German investigative agency, whether we are talking about the federal level, the state level, or the municipal level. Not from the Federal Criminal Police Office, not from any of the state criminal police offices, not from any prosecutor's office, not from any local court, not from any regional court, and not from any higher regional court either. Not today, not next Tuesday, and not even if you ask really politely and show up at my door with a homemade cake in hand.

The reasons all boil down to one single word, and that word is experience. A quarter century spent inside a system that pays its court appointed experts worse than its own parking lot attendants, treats scientific rigor as some sort of optional accessory, and routinely mistakes procedural theater for actual justice is more than enough empirical grounds for reaching a conclusion like this one. The final stretch really just confirmed what the earlier years had already been quietly hinting at for quite a while. The specific details I am going to go ahead and keep to myself at this particular point. My lawyers appreciate the restraint enormously.

International engagements of course remain very welcome, meaning courts, agencies, and institutions outside of German jurisdiction. The IIFE carries on with its forensic research, its scientific publications, and its expert witness work under the exact same standards that made German authorities our clients in the first place. We just happen to deliver those standards somewhere the invoices actually get paid on time these days, and somewhere the science in the courtroom actually still gets heard and properly understood.

To the colleagues, the officers, and the prosecutors who worked with genuine integrity and with actual brains throughout all of those years, and there were quite a few really good people among them, you know exactly who I am talking about and you have my full and sincere respect. As for everyone else, the answer you never got from me in person is sitting right here on this page.
